When I became the patriarch of the Wanberg Family-Name in America that has roots in the ancestral farm in Nordfjord, Norway, I became concerned about my nine grandchildren's knowledge of their heritage in North Dakota, where I was born and raised. Also, I wanted them to have visual memories of my wife’s (their deceased grandmother) up-bringing in Norway. I wanted them to see, hear and feel the story of their heritage.

In 1997, I organized a ten-day "Family Quest" with my son Lars, who is a photographer, and his two sons, Nils and Erland, from the West Coast to ND,  to visit hands-on the places of my youth that were largely unknown to them.  Lars documented the memorable trip, which was truly bonding and now is preserved for my great grandchildren.  Lars subsequently began documenting the story of his wife’s great grandparents of French and American Indian heritage from the Choctaw Nation, who as children walked the “Trail of Tears” from Mississippi Cajun country to Oklahoma.

Many families are unable to make such a journey or take the time for such an experience, except for a possible family reunion or perhaps an anniversary or festival.  Over the past year, we decided to prepare a website with a visual history of our diverse genealogies and our heritage that can be traced back to the 1700s in Norway. For me, I wanted to publish a hand-crafted, leather-bound "Family Heritage Album" to place in the State Historical Library, to clone four coffee table albums for each of my children and provide each of my grandchildren with a DVD of their ancestral story. What's evolved is a family inter-generational enterprise to apply our experience for the benefit of other families, either onsite or online.
